At The Vine, Confirmation is just what the word implies. It is a public profession of faith made by a Christ-follower, in which they ‘confirm’ that they believe they are a child of God, saved by grace through faith. They are confirming their faith, that the gift of God’s love for Jesus Christ’s sake that they have received in baptism and through God’s Word is their’s, not because their parents, pastor, etc… have told them so, but because they are compelled by the Holy Spirit to do so.
With our children and youth, this “confirmation” takes place after a period of instruction in the basics of the faith. We use a course of study called “Family-Based Confirmation” developed by RJ Grunewald, a minister at Faith Lutheran Church in Troy, MI. In this course, parent(s)/guardian(s) lead and journey along with their youth through a study of things like communion, baptism, the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, an overview of the Bible, and more. In the event that a youth does not have Christ-following parents to guide them, the church is happy to provide Christ-following adults to serve as “spiritual parents” to the youth throughout the journey.
Pastor John David will meet with parents and youth bi-monthly throughout their confirmation journey to answer questions, address concerns, evaluate progress, and provide accountability. Generally, we believe youth’s need to be at least 10 years old to begin this journey though there is no set-age specified in God’s Word. If you believe your youth is ready, please contact John David to set-up a visit.
What will I need?
A Bible… The English Standard Version (ESV) is an excellent translation from the original languages of Hebrew and Greek and is suggested for this process. We also suggest the New Living Translation (NLT) as a companion to the ESV as it is a more readable, yet quality translation. For a free and excellent Bible app in which you can find each of these versions, we suggest the YouVersion app. If you would like something more in-depth, we suggest the Lutheran Study Bible which you can purchase in digital or paper-copy editions by clicking on the link.
The Small Catechism – Luther’s Small Catechism is not a replacement to the Bible… It is simply a book of Questions and Answers about God’s Word to aid parents in teaching their children the basics of the faith. Both digital and paper copies can be purchased from Amazon. Click the link here or above. There is also a visual edition that can be found here.
The Password to access the links for “Confirmation Year 1” and “Confirmation Year 2” below. You will receive this from Pastor John David.
