The Vine is a young gathering of Christ followers in Grapevine, TX. Honestly, there are a lot of Christian churches in this area, doing a lot of great things. However, we have noticed that there is still a significant and growing portion of the population who do not yet know our Savior. We believe that is why we exist. To press into this calling, we choose not to have a lot of programs, and instead focus on discipleship the way Jesus, and in turn Paul did it. We provide followers with people who are a few steps ahead of them on this journey of faith and invite them to imitate these people as they imitate Christ. Disciples at The Vine are consistently asked, “What is God saying to you?” and are then held accountable to the plans they make in response.
We also work to develop and gather in extended families on mission out in our local communities. We do this because we are convinced from God’s Word that we are created to do life together encouraging one another in our faith walk, raising our children together, serving those in need together, and reaching out to those who don’t yet know Jesus together.
Oh yeah… We love to worship our God together as well! Every Sunday morning, and a few other times each year, our communities gather together to receive Grace from our God, be moved by the Power of the Holy Spirit through the singing, preaching, and teaching of the Word, and responding in praise.
If you would like to gain a greater understanding of who we are, check out our detailed Vision Path below:
Vision (What we do?)
Together, we abide in Christ and bear His fruit. John 15:5
Could there be a better description of the Church? We have been made a part of our Savior Jesus Christ. Living in Him we receive life and the hope of eternity with renewed, perfect bodies in a renewed, perfect creation. In the meantime, we live together as branches receiving grace upon grace from the Vine and working together to produce missional fruit in our various vocations... spouse, parent, student, child, neighbor, co-worker, etc...
Values (Why we do it?)
Together Not Alone (Acts 2:46-47)
We are not called to live out our faith in this world alone. Followers of Christ need to worship and study together, encourage one another, and together, reach out with the love of Christ. We are learning to live as extended family, with Jesus at the center, seeking to transform the world along the lines of relationship as we share the Gospel in the everyday tasks of life.
Transformation over Information (Col 3:16, Mk 14:22-24, Gal 3:27, 1 Cor 1:11)
What a blessing it is that we have a God who has not made us to walk blindly in this sinful world. He has given us His Word to proclaim His love in Christ to us, and to teach us how to respond to that love. This Word is not merely contained in the Scriptures, but it is the Scriptures. It is the Word by which we live and breathe.
We embrace the mystery of the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. He has claimed us in baptism and declared that all of His promises in Christ are for us. In Holy Communion He gives us grace upon grace. We receive the Body and Blood of Christ – forgiveness that we can smell, see, taste, and touch. We celebrate these tangible gifts of Christ and are empowered by them to bring His love to others.
We have the best teacher, Jesus Christ, for living as children of God. Christ taught His disciples to do only what He saw His Father doing. As people of The Vine, we first imitate Christ, and second imitate others who are a step or two ahead of us in an intentional discipleship journey.
Family ON Mission (1 Tim 2:4, Acts 1:8, Deut 6:6-7, Eph 2:8-10)
God desires that all people come to know Him and the love and forgiveness which can only be found through the gift of His Son. In response to the love He has given us, we have the same desire.
Parents, a father and a mother, are the primary teachers of the faith in their child’s life. We affirm this parental vocation and strive to equip and encourage parents to raise their children in the faith. We also commit to step up and fill the gap where one or both of these parents is spiritually vacant.
Christianity is not a part of our lives – it is who we are. Therefore, we live every vocation in which God has placed us in response to His love, faithfully serving Him as a spouse, parent, child, student, co-worker, neighbor, etc…
Multiplication Not Addition (2 Tim 2:2, Matt 28:19)
The Vine is not a place where only one teaches and the others follow. It is a place that looks to grow through the multiplication of disciples, missional communities, and churches. It is a place where those with the gifts of leadership are sought, encouraged, equipped, and given opportunities to use what God has given them. At The Vine followers of Christ are encouraged to find places God already has them gathering with others and there, form new missional communities. It is a place that is infused with a DNA that plants new churches, raising up leaders and sending them out to advance the Kingdom of God.
Our Savior calls us to bring His love to a lost and broken people in a lost and broken world. We are convinced that to reach the Lost is no longer to invite them to our church, but to bring Church to them. Therefore, we gather together in our communities, our neighborhoods, our schools, our places of work, on ball-fields, restaurants, and coffee houses to plant seeds of faith through our actions first, then through our words. We pray that the Holy Spirit will work these seeds into a growing and thriving faith, that they will be lost no longer.
Valuation (How do we know if we are doing it?)
As a church, there are some things worth counting. Therefore we celebrate…
We have a great emphasis on reaching the Lost with the love of Christ. Therefore, we take great joy in witnessing our God claiming them as His children, making all His promises in Christ for them, through the water and His Word in Baptism.
Followers of Christ are called to go and make disciples and discipleship does not just happen. We believe Jesus showed us an intentional way to make disciples and we try to follow that pattern in our Huddles. Therefore we are excited to see believers accepting the call to learn to follow Christ in a Huddle.
We are not called to live out our faith in this world alone. Followers of Christ need to worship and study together, encourage one another, and reach out with the love of Christ together. We do this in missional communities. We are then filled with joy when we see these communities growing and multiplying.
We hope to instill specific attributes in the followers of Christ who are a part of The Vine. We pray that they will be moved to live in Christ by abiding in...
A Missional Community
People of The Vine joyfully and consistently gather together with their missional community as well as with the larger family in worship. Here they live in authentic relationships with brothers and sisters in Christ. They confess sins, give and receive forgiveness, praise the Lord, serve one another, and are equipped to reach out with the love of Christ.
The Sacrament Regularly
People of The Vine remember and are strengthened by the promises they have received in baptism everyday, and receive grace upon grace in Holy Communion as often as they gather with the larger faith community in worship.
Rhythms of Rest in The Word
People of The Vine do not solely rely on the community to receive God’s Word. They dwell in His Word through daily devotion and regular, deeper study of it. They take a weekly Sabbath along with their family to worship our God and simply have fun together. They also take a day each month to rest in God’s Word in the way He has particularly wired them. Finally, they plan a week or two each year to get away with their family to vacation, enjoy God’s creation, and encourage one-another. In this way the people of The Vine live out their faith from a place of rest.
A Discipleship Huddle
People of The Vine learn to follow Christ by following another of the faith who can say with Paul, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ.” (1 Cor. 1:11). We do this in discipleship Huddles.
It is our further prayer that these followers of Christ will be moved to respond to His love bearing His fruit...
Serving 3+ Lost People
People of The Vine see every part of their lives as service to Christ, doing their best to care for others in the vocations where God has called them to impact them for Him. They can name at least 3 lost people they are intentionally caring for, serving, and reaching out to with the Word of Christ.
With First-Fruit Generosity
People of The Vine will not be bound by the material things of this world. They will be first-fruit givers, generously giving back to God of the gifts He has given them.
Honoring Matthew 18
People of The Vine lift up and honor their brothers and sisters in Christ by living out the pattern to deal with sin between one another which Jesus laid out for us in Matthew 18.
Vehicles (How do we do it?)
The strategy of The Vine is really quite simple. We equip followers of Christ to live out their faith in the various vocations to which God has called them, to serve the people they come into contact within those vocations and to proclaim the love of Christ to them through both words and actions.
In the book Building a Discipling Culture by Mike Breen & 3DM Ministries (a ministry The Vine has teamed with and learns from) the following quote is found: “If you make disciples, you always get the church. But if you make a church, you rarely get disciples.” The Vine embraces this thought as truth. Therefore, we are dedicated to making disciples through a decentralized rabbinical style of teaching following the pattern in which Christ taught His disciples. All other parts of our strategy are built off this first piece.
The Vine is made up of several missional communities where people of The Vine gather together weekly for worship and the study of God’s Word (Up), fellowship and encouragement (In), and serving others and welcoming the Lost (Our). These communities are made up of 20 to 70 people who have something in common... a neighborhood, stage of Life, hobby, etc… It is our belief that these communities serve as an inviting front door to the faith for those who are lost or far from the faith. We pray that through acts of service, caring words, and honest yet peaceful attitudes toward those around them they will be able to bring others into their community of faith planting seeds of faith in their hearts. We also see these communities as comfortable atmospheres to which people of The Vine can bring those they are working with, caring for, and serving in their many vocations in life.
Communities Gathered Together
These missional communities will all gather together weekly for corporate worship where they receive Christ in the Word proclaimed and in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. While these gatherings are liturgical, they do not hold to any particular “style of worship,” but instead incorporate elements from many different settings that the people of The Vine are gifted to do well. These services are not focused on evangelizing the Lost but on building up the faithful. That said, we pray that the services are not completely over the heads of those who are new to the faith. We rely on those who are more versed in our worship gatherings to come alongside the new and make them more familiar with all they can be receiving.
Children gather with the larger community during the first movement of these worship gatherings. They are then invited to move to another area to receive age-appropriate teaching and to be given the opportunity to praise our God in interactive and enjoyable ways. Parents, other adults, and youth stay together to continue worshipping in a more focused atmosphere.
It is our hope that through these gatherings the faithful are built up, encouraged by the love of Christ, and moved to respond to His love in their many vocations.
Ministry of Vocation
We pray that the people of The Vine will learn to not see Christianity as just a part of their lives, but as their identity. In this way of life they will find that the faith the Holy Spirit has given and continues to strengthen in them changes everything... How they see the world, view the lost, care for creation, and live their lives in the various vocations to which God has called them.
It is through these people God has chosen to work to bring His love to lost and broken people in a lost and broken world. It is through these people living out their faith in their various vocations where The Vine will have its greatest impact on the people of the Grapevine area and surrounding communities. Motivated by His love, the people of The Vine will plant seeds of faith in the hearts of those who God has already placed in their sphere of influence. It is through these people of The Vine, moved by the Gospel of Christ, that we pray many may come to know the saving love of our Savior.
